Impact: More Than Money

Arnold Perkins, Deen Tyler, and James Hill participate in The Brotherhood of Elders, which provides mentoring and targeted support to men and boys of color. EBCF created a fund to facilitate their giving.
Sometimes it’s EBCF’s non-monetary support that can make all the difference. Every day we engage with our grantees, our donors, community leaders, elected officials, and others around critical community concerns. Every day—and well into many evenings—our James Irvine Foundation Conference Center is a hub of activity for the community, hosting meetings, trainings, retreats, and celebrations. And beyond the walls of our building, we’re out in the community, connecting with leaders throughout our region on topics ranging from planned giving for nonprofits to confronting suburban poverty.

EBCF convenes forums for community leaders, our donors, and our colleagues from other Bay Area foundations to learn together about issues of common concern and to better align our philanthropic investments for greater impact. These gatherings include the Oakland Literacy Coalition, the Alameda County Funders Forum, and discussions about expanding opportunities for men and boys of color.

We believe that lasting change comes not only from good programs, but also from promoting policies that support a more just and equitable East Bay. EBCF speaks out on issues we care about, through public statements, op-ed pieces, and conversations with our elected officials. In 2014 we added our voice to others throughout California calling for state funds to increase quality and expand access in early-childhood programs—an advocacy effort that resulted in more than $270 million for early education for fiscal year 2014–15.

In addition to grants, we offer our Community Partners free training in critical areas of nonprofit management, such as donor cultivation and financial oversight. “I love these workshops! They will have a huge impact on our budgeting process and how we communicate our financial results moving forward. Being a partner with EBCF has also led to more funds and funders recognizing our value,” says Dr. Barbara Bunn McCullough, Executive Director, Brighter Beginnings.

As a resource for propelling change, we publish research and fund research published by others. These reports include in-depth looks at solutions to problems, such as job opportunities for those on the margins in the East Bay; practical guides for action, such as opportunities to improve early education with California’s Local Control Funding Formula; and information collection and analysis for decision-makers, such as economic data reports on the East Bay to help businesses and governments plan for growth.
